How to Prepare for an Epic Hike into Horseshoe Canyon, Alberta

A How-To Guide Exploring Horseshoe Canyon

If you’re looking for a stunning badlands adventure that feels like stepping into another world, Horseshoe Canyon (near Drumheller, Alberta) is an absolute must-visit. This dramatic horseshoe-shaped canyon carved into the Canadian Badlands offers breathtaking layered rock formations, sweeping views, and a sense of ancient wonder that truly “talks” to your soul. The photos you shared capture its magic perfectly — from golden sunsets lighting up the hills to the wooden boardwalks and trails overlooking the valley.
Horseshoe Canyon

Location & Getting There

Horseshoe Canyon is located about 17 km (10 miles) west of Drumheller in Kneehill County, right off Highway 575. It’s an easy drive from Calgary (about 1.5–2 hours) and makes a

fantastic day trip or multi-day getaway in the heart of Alberta’s badlands. Free parking is available at the top, with viewing platforms and trails leading down into the canyon.  Not sure about the free parking at peak tine, there was a time when there was a vehicle set up that was collecting a parking fee, not sure if that is still so, or not?

Camping Nearby – Book Ahead!

For the full experience, stay at the Horseshoe Canyon Campground, just steps from the canyon rim. This family-friendly spot offers:

  • Serviced RV sites
  • Tent camping
  • Cozy cabins

It’s the perfect base for sunrise and sunset hikes, stargazing, and exploring the area without rushing back to town. Summer gets busy, so book your site well in advance through their website or Campspot!

Hiking Tips: Preparing for the Descent & Ascent

The main trails take you down into the canyon for close-up exploration of the eroded hills, dry creek beds, and unique geology. Important: You cannot drive down — it’s all on foot. The hike down is steep in places, and the climb back up can feel much tougher, especially in heat.

Essential Preparation for Summer Hikes:

Water, water, water! Bring at least 2–3 litres per person (more if you’re spending several hours down there). There’s no reliable water source in the canyon.
Sun protection is non-negotiable: Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen (reapply often), sunglasses, and light long-sleeved clothing. The badlands offer very little shade once you’re down in the valley.
Timing matters: Avoid the hottest part of the day (midday in summer). Start early in the morning or late afternoon for cooler temps and beautiful light.

Clothing & footwear: Sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good grip — the terrain is uneven, loose, and can be dusty or muddy after rain.
Pace yourself: Take breaks in any available shade. Listen to your body — the return climb is the real workout.
Safety first: Limited cell service on the canyon floor. Tell someone your plans and expected return time. Know your limits, especially if hiking with kids or pets.

Other helpful items to pack:

  • Snacks/energy food
  • A small first-aid kit
  • Binoculars for spotting wildlife
  • Camera or phone for those stunning photos
  • Rain jacket (weather can change quickly)
The trails range from easy boardwalk sections at the top to more adventurous paths below. You can keep it short or explore deeper — it’s very customizable.
Why Visit Horseshoe Canyon?
This place combines natural beauty, peaceful solitude, and that unmistakable badlands magic. Whether you’re watching the sun dip behind the hills, wandering the pathways, or simply soaking in the vast valley views, it’s a spot that stays with you.
Horseshoe Canyon is open seasonally — check current conditions on the Kneehill County website before you go. Pack smart, respect the land, and you’ll have an unforgettable Alberta adventure!

Happy hiking!

Forty Mile Park | Peaceful Moments

Escape to 40 Mile Park: A Peaceful Gem by the Reservoir

Nestled in southern Alberta (County of Forty Mile), just a short drive from nearby communities like Foremost, 40 Mile Park is one of those underrated campgrounds that feels like a true getaway. Built around the 11 km (about 7-mile) 40 Mile Reservoir—an artificial lake created for irrigation storage—the park offers a big, beautiful body of water perfect for boating, fishing, swimming in the designated area, or just soaking in the views.

What makes it awesome? Depending on when you go, it can be incredibly peaceful—quiet evenings where the only sounds are lapping water, birds, and maybe a distant boat. Off-peak times deliver that serene escape where you can truly unwind. The park has plenty of amenities: around 90 seasonal and 90 overnight sites (many with power and sewer hookups), a group camping area, sandy beach access, playgrounds, volleyball, basketball, picnic spots, and even a little on-site store for essentials.

The sunsets are something special, as this photo captures—fiery orange skies streaking over the trees and campground, turning the whole place golden. It's family-oriented but easy to find your own quiet corner. If you're looking for a relaxing spot not too far from home, with water, nature, and that perfect mix of activity and calm, 40 Mile Park delivers. Highly recommend booking ahead in summer, but shoulder seasons? Pure bliss.

A Sentimental Ode to Camping and Letting Go

Whispers of the Wild: A Sentimental Ode to Camping and Letting Go

In the relentless whirl of our modern lives—alarms blaring at dawn, screens flickering through the night, deadlines chasing us like shadows—we often forget the simple art of pausing. But oh, the sweet surrender of camping! It's more than pitching a tent or kindling a fire; it's a gentle rebellion against the rush, an invitation to rediscover the rhythm of the earth beneath our feet.

Imagine this: You seek out a hidden gem, perhaps a quiet spot like 40 Mile Park in Alberta, where the Bow River murmurs secrets to the cottonwoods, and the prairie sky stretches wide like an open heart. Not the crowded campgrounds with RVs humming like distant beehives, but a secluded nook where the only agenda is the sun's slow arc across the heavens. Here, you arrive not as a conqueror, but as a weary traveler, unloading your pack and letting the weight of the world slip from your shoulders like an old, forgotten coat.

As twilight drapes its velvet cloak, you unwind. The fire crackles softly, a storyteller weaving tales in sparks and smoke. No emails ping, no notifications demand your gaze. Instead, you stop—truly stop—and let the senses awaken. See the wildflowers nodding in the breeze, their petals a riot of color: golden buttercups, shy violets, bold lupines painting the meadow like an artist's dream. Bend close, inhale their delicate perfume, a fragrance untainted by city smog, carrying hints of earth and rain and quiet joy. In these moments, time unfolds not in minutes, but in breaths, in the rustle of leaves, in the distant call of a loon echoing over the water.

And here's the magic: In this letting go, we plant our own flowers, metaphorically speaking. Seeds of gratitude sown in the soil of stillness, blooming into renewed perspectives. A conversation by the campfire that mends a frayed bond, a solitary walk that sparks forgotten dreams, a night under stars that reminds us of our small, wondrous place in the cosmos. Camping isn't escape, it's embrace. It teaches us that in unplugging from the frenzy, we reconnect with ourselves, with loved ones, with the wild pulse of life that beats beyond our hurried paths.

So, dear wanderer, find your spot. Pack lightly, leave expectations behind, and venture forth. Let the campground be your sanctuary, where you unwind the knots of daily strife and weave new threads of peace. In the end, you'll return not just rested, but reborn, carrying the scent of wildflowers in your soul, ready to face the rush with a quieter, fuller heart.

Car Camping Tent Setup | Did it Work

KassDays Tests the KAMPKEEPER SUV Car Tent: A Game-Changer for Car Camping?

In their YouTube video "Car Camping Tent Setup | Does it Work," the KassDays channel dives into the world of car camping with a hands-on review of the KAMPKEEPER SUV Car Tent, a tailgate awning tent designed to transform your vehicle into a cozy campsite. This article explores the setup, features, and performance of this innovative camping solution, highlighting its potential to enhance outdoor adventures for car campers.

The KAMPKEEPER SUV Car Tent is designed for convenience, offering over 110 square feet of shaded space that attaches directly to the tailgate of an SUV, sedan, or 4WD vehicle. The KassDays video showcases the setup process, which is surprisingly straightforward. With just one pole and a few stakes, the tent can be pitched in about 10 minutes, even for beginners. The video demonstrates how the tent secures snugly around the vehicle’s hatch, with extra bungee cords ensuring a tight fit. This ease of setup is a major draw for campers looking to minimize hassle, especially after a long drive to a campsite.

Key features highlighted in the video include the tent’s spacious design, which provides ample room for coolers, chairs, and camping gear, making it ideal for solo travelers or small groups. The tent’s 150D PU800mm water-repellent treatment and seam-sealed construction proved effective during a rainy camping trip, keeping the interior dry even with the hatch open. A large screen window with a zippered storm flap offers ventilation and views, while mesh side panels keep bugs at bay. The KassDays team notes the tent’s UV-resistant silver coating, which helps maintain a comfortable temperature under the sun, a critical feature for summer camping.

The video also touches on the tent’s versatility. Its humanized design allows campers to zip up the awning for privacy or leave it open for airflow, catering to various camping scenarios like festivals, sports events, or road trips. While the tent lacks a built-in floor, the KassDays team suggests pairing it with a tarp for added protection, a practical tip for keeping gear clean and dry. The tent’s compatibility with a range of vehicles makes it a flexible choice for car campers who don’t want to invest in a rooftop tent or a full RV setup.

However, the video points out some considerations. The tent requires a relatively flat surface to stake properly, which may limit its use in rugged terrain. Additionally, while spacious, the tent’s size is somewhat dependent on the height of the vehicle’s hatch, which could affect headroom in smaller cars. Despite these minor drawbacks, the KassDays team praises the tent’s durability and ease of packing, as it folds neatly into its original bag for storage.

The KAMPKEEPER SUV Car Tent, as showcased by KassDays, offers a compelling alternative to traditional tent camping. Its quick setup, weather resistance, and spacious design make it a strong contender for car campers seeking convenience without sacrificing comfort. For those inspired to try it, the tent is available on Amazon, and the KassDays YouTube channel provides a vivid look at its real-world performance. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a newbie hitting the road, this car tent could be the key to unlocking stress-free outdoor adventures.

40 Mile Park, Reservoir and Campsite in Southern Alberta

If you've not been to 40 Mile Park, you are definitely missing out, absolutely loved it there. We only stayed one night but this campsite had all the amenities, water hookup, electric hookup, flushing toilets and showers nearby and even a small store. I guess I'm not that picky as these few small things made me happier than all heck.

There were people out boating, the campsite was not over crowded, it was actually peaceful. There were certainly places to walk about if you so desired and there certainly was a beautiful view of the reservoir and the windmills across the way. We are going to have full lengths videos coming out on 40 Mile Park in the near future, so please subscribe to our YouTube Channel @KassDays so you don't miss them and check out all the other varied videos we have at the same time.
