Get Your Garden Spots Ready for Sunflowers

Getting Your Garden Spot Ready for Planting: The Beauty and Benefits of Sunflowers

As the winter frost gradually fades away and the sun starts to peek through the clouds, garden enthusiasts eagerly await the arrival of spring. This delightful season invites us to embrace the outdoors and work on our green thumb skills. To ensure a flourishing and vibrant garden, it is essential to start by prepping your garden spot for planting. And what better way to bring radiance and joy to your garden than by planting a few sunflowers?

Preparing your garden spot is akin to setting the stage for a mesmerizing botanical performance. The earthy aroma, the vibrant colours, and the melodious sound of buzzing bees are all part of this enchanting act. By readying the garden spot, you provide your plants with the best foundation for growth, ensuring you enjoy a plentiful harvest.

To begin, clean your garden spot by removing any debris that may have accumulated during the winter months. Raking away fallen leaves, sticks, and other remnants of nature's slumber will facilitate proper air circulation and allow sunlight to reach the soil, stimulating the germination process. Additionally, the removal of these potential hazards will prevent soil erosion, safeguarding the overall health of your garden. Gardening and Sunflowers

Yukon Gold Potato Harvest for Our Small Family

Growing Yukon Gold Potatoes: A Harvest for Small-Time Gardeners

For small-time gardeners, growing Yukon Gold potatoes can be a fulfilling and rewarding experience. These potatoes are known for their golden-yellow flesh, buttery taste, and firm texture that make them perfect for baking, frying, and boiling.

Harvesting potatoes is a process that requires patience, planning, and careful attention to detail. The best time to harvest Yukon Gold potatoes is when the plants have started to die back and the leaves have turned yellow. This usually happens around 100-120 days after planting.

To start the harvest, use a garden fork or shovel to gently loosen the soil around the potato plants. Be careful not to damage the tubers as you work your way around the garden bed. Once the soil is loose enough, pull the plants out of the ground.

Now it's time to dig for gold! Use your hands or a digging fork to gently unearth the potatoes. Be sure to remove any loose soil and rocks as you go. As you collect the potatoes, place them into a basket or crate to avoid damaging them.

After the harvest is complete, it's important to let the potatoes dry out for a few days. This allows the skins to thicken and prevents them from bruising during storage. Once they are dry, brush off any excess dirt and store them in a cool, dark, and dry place.

For small-time gardeners, harvesting a crop of Yukon Gold potatoes can be a satisfying and delicious experience. With the right mix of patience, planning, and effort, you can enjoy the bountiful rewards of your potato garden.

Summer is coming to an end, that makes me sad!

Here we are, it is nearly the end of August 2023 and summer is quickly drawing to a close, that is sad for me, not looking forward to months of snow and ice which seems to go on forever. We are showing you in this video how our plants are at this point in time, we did get quite a few tomatoes this year and the majority of our flowers did do very well and some are still thriving.

We did plant a couple of different zucchini plants and we actually got a few decent zucchini out of them, cooked them up, they were great have to say. Please do us a favour if you have some time, watch a few of our full length videos from beginning to end, we truly need to build up some watch hours on reg format videos. At some point in the near future we are going to have a promo, yes that means some giveaways for our viewers. We have ordered some items with the KassDays logo on them, this will be one of the prizes and we are thinking on what else we can do. We are going to make a YouTube video on what ideas you may have.

Hailstorm in Okotoks and how our Greenhouse and Garden got Damaged

You often hope that these seriously damaging hailstorms miss you, well this time we were not so lucky, our garden and greenhouse took a major hit. The plants we hope will recover somewhat, some may not come back, too soon to tell.

As for the greenhouse, we did manage to band-aid it up, went to the dollar store and bought some fairly sturdy plastic shower curtains and did a patch job, going to attach a pic here, doesn't look the greatest but it does keep some of our plants a bit more safe should another major hailstorm come through. Maybe next year we will get a sturdier small greenhouse.

Raised Garden Beds that we use for our Gardening

Kass decided we needed to try out some raised garden beds and so far, so good. The garden boxes were fairly easy for Kass to put together, takes a bit of effort but the setup was relatively quick and  straightforward, on top of all that they look great.

We planted Onions in the first one, tomatoes and zucchini in the second one and potatoes in the third one.

Okotoks Flower Season Coming Up

How can you help your flowers to look beautiful and healthy? Hey, I'm sorry I don't have a definite answer to that, I just kind of wing it, you know, on a wing and a prayer, and most times it kind of works okay. But, having said that I have also had some epic fails. let me tell ya.

I believe for here in Okotoks it does matter greatly which plants you pick for the growing season. The one I'm showing here is very easy to maintain and it likes a lot of sun, so okay I can do those two things, simple enough. If you get the more delicate plants with the extraordinary flowers I think you really need to study what those types of plants want, to at least have a bit of related knowledge in regards to that specific flowering plant.

Back a couple of years ago, Kass made the first attempt to grow potatoes out of containers, the end result wasn't all that wonderful to be honest. So, we did not attempt to grow potatoes again for a couple of years, until last spring. I thought I would give it a whirl.

When I use to live up in northern Alberta I used to grow a large garden and had an actual greenhouse and you know what, pretty much all of my plants did fairly well, even so I was in High Level Alberta. I tend to read up on certain things if they are not doing well and try to figure out what I need to do to help them to do better, Wing and a Prayer, and then some, let's go with that.

Don't forget to visit us on KassDays and see what videos we have posted lately, or just go to our YouTube Channel. Hope to catch you there.

Spring has Sprung and My Plant Envy is Growing

Have you gotten the plant envy bug yet? I certainly have and I just can't figure out what to precisely do so I'm kind of all over the map, You see in this pic we have some lovely red Petunias that did fabulously, what do you think?

We are going a bit of a different route this year, we are attempting to grow some right from seed, anyone have any recommendations that will help us out? If you do please feel free to leave us a comment.

As you already know we are Calgary Vloggers that are doing videos on our daily life as we live it so the content is varied. You can follow us on YouTube here.
